GITMO: WAR AND REMEMBRANCE

June 26th, 2008

As far as I can recall, no one ever said that war is fun. As far as I can recall, no one ever said that prisons should be fun places, either.

Still, the Muslim prisoners being kept in Guantanamo have it pretty damned good especially considering why they are there–as terrorist suspects who not only despise America but who may have killed Americans and who, given the chance, would kill as many of our troops in Iraq as they could and perpetrate even more heinous atrocities on our soil.

We could house them and treat them in a Club Med atmosphere, accord them all the rights and privileges accorded our domestic prisoners, including law libraries, gym facilities, conjugal visits (i.e., sexual romps), etc. and then release them so they could continue their terrorist ways.

Instead, we merely provide, “basic supplies, such as clothing, towels, sheets, blankets, soap, shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste. They also are given a copy of the Koran and three ‘culturally appropriate’ meals. Prayer rugs also are distributed, and a recorded call to prayer is broadcast five times a day.”

Nevertheless, Muslim convert and former Army chaplain, James Lee, and Amnesty International USA, (AIUSA), are currently protesting the horrendous treatment of the terrorist suspects at GITMO.

I wonder if Lee and AIUSA officials witnessed the horrendous events of September 11th, 2001 or if they would care if we suffered another such attack?

War is Hell. Keep that in mind, AIUSA and Mr. Lee!

Picturesque Gloucester, “America’s Oldest Seaport,” should now also be labeled “Home of America’s Dumbest Teens.” Whatever their motivation, fast tracking to adulthood, looking for love and attention in all the wrong places, or just plain, old bubbling hormones, at least seventeen of Gloucester High School’s 1200 students—mostly sophomores—have intentionally gotten themselves with child. (http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20080620/pregnancy_pact_080620/20080620?hub=CTVNewsAt11)

In days of old, that was crudely labeled getting knocked up but these kids don’t see it that way at all. In the very bad old days, teens who had gotten pregnant were packed off to another locale—to a distant relative or a home for unwed mothers—and, if they returned at all, their young motherhood wasn’t advertised. These Gloucester girls not only planned their pregnancies so they could raise their babies together but were disappointed if they weren’t impregnated and, no doubt, will try, try, try again. Those who did succeed were high-fiving one another in the halls of Gloucester High.

I served in the trenches of high school as a teacher for 28 years, so I know something of how these girls think, or used to know. Most are good kids, romantics to the core, infatuated with 13 year old Juliet’s affair with Romeo, somewhat distraught over their unfortunate denouement, who then went on their merry way, content with just being teenagers. I’m also familiar with their teen angst but most lived through it.

Today, they don’t all live through it...

My interpretation is that Mr. WorldPress merely started a new blog under the "Uncategorized" category, named it Truthful News and started the conversation off by saying "Hello world!". I further interpret this blog is meant to be the take-off of what used to be the TruthfulNews.com forum which had a fairly good cast of Users for quite a good while until it eventually got ruined by at least one personality disorder who deliberately ruined the old forum for everyone else by taking advantage of TruthfulNews.com's liberal policy on freedom of speech.

Since this particular blog is under the "Uncategorized" category I expect to see a variety of new topics that may show up at any given moment providing our writers are sharing what we honestly believe is Truthful News and are willing to agree that we can disagree in a mature and intelligent manner or at the very worse at least use sarcastic humor for the sake of humor but never for malice. As for me, if I get bored reading something and can't think of anything funny to say then I'll likely skip over it rather than waste my valuable time complaining or disagreeing about it.

As for blogging, I'm still unsure how this all works? I registered but did not open a blog, per se, and so far I still can't edit anything I've written under this particular blog? I expected to see an "Edit" button somewhere like other forums have but there is none that I see? I have to admit though, I've barely investigated the rest of WorldPress and the most I've done is visit this particular blog and then registered to edit a syntax error but still can't edit anything. I suspect it may require me to actually start up a new blog before I can edit anything anywhere on WorldPress, that's my guess?

And it's just my own personal interpretation that the main emphasis of this particular blog is more of a "Truthful News" chat-room-like blog rather than anything else and as such our world is invited to join in and say whatever we want whenever we want.

In summary if anyone has something truthful they wish to express to our world then there's the offer to do it here, but otherwise I sure as heck hope it's not about superstition, sports, nor more politics or else I might just suspect it's a boring neo-communist plot to overthrow my freakin' mind? :-)

There has been a remarkable silence emanating from Rep. John Conyers (D- MI) concerning an issue very dear to his heart: reparations for American Blacks to compensate them for the injustice that was slavery. A serious observer of the political scene in June 2008 must wonder why and perhaps be suspicious of his recent quiescence?

Conyers climbed aboard the Reparations Express in 2000, stressing that the movement was "not coming forward in an accusatory tone toward any citizens or their ancestors," but that "we simply think that Congress should take a look at the lingering effects of slavery so that we may get a deeper appreciation of them and reach some consensus about what the solutions may be. The issue of reparations is not something beyond our understanding," Conyers wrote. "It's a pretty fundamental issue if you look at it. I'm saying it's time we did." (http://www.answers.com/topic/john-conyers)

I have a few disquieting differences with that statement, as well as with Conyers’ apparent de-emphasis of the “issue.”
First, if his tone was not “accusatory” then what is it? It certainly isn’t laudatory or complimentary to even suggest that anyone or any entity owes compensation to Blacks for a vile, worldwide, institution that was ended in the United States over seven generations ago at a cost of hundreds of thousands of casualties in our Civil War. As for the “lingering effects of slavery,” that contention too is baffling for the same reason, namely that any victims of Black slavery are long dead and any residual effects that carry over for that length of time must surely be attributable to the victims rather than the perpetrators of the evil of slavery. Finally, if the issue is “fundamental,” I would ask, fundamental to what?

However, more to the point, and aside from the fact that other supporters of the idea of reparations for Blacks include “Reverend” Louis Farrakhan and others of his ilk and aside from the absurdity and impracticality of exacting reparations from Whites when thousands of freed Blacks also enslaved their own in the 1800’s, the whole idea of reparations is as repugnant and as racist as slavery.

I refer the reader to the African-American organization, Project 21, (http://www.nationalcenter.org/P21PRReparations802.html), to a very angry White organization, http://www.wewontpay.com/pl10.html, and to a rabid Black reparations website, http://www.blackcommentator.com/10_reparations.html.

My purpose here is not to debate Black reparations. Rather, it involves my initial rhetorical question: Why are Blacks such as Rep. Conyers so quiet on the issue of late?

This is just conjecture but could it be that Conyers and his compatriots know that to talk about reparations now, when Senator Barack Hussein Obama potentially could become the next president of the United States of America, would spook the living bejesus out of many White supporters?

It’s just a thought but I think Whites in America should consider what that would mean. It could make $4.00 a gallon—or $20.00 a gallon-- gas prices seem reasonable.

I rarely devote this space to anything but political matters but hereby make an exception for a movie review, of sorts.
American Beauty is classified as a comedy by Moviefone, which is ironically comedic in and of itself. Even describing it as a black comedy—a term which will definitely be declared non-PC and banned if Obama becomes our president—doesn’t satisfactorily describe this flick. Films such as Fight Club, Natural Born Killers, the Kill Bill series all plumb the depths of Hollywood’s collective and twisted violent psyche. American Beauty exposes the depths of Tinsel Town’s despair.
This now-8 year old film is truly an exceptional excursion into nihilism, even for Hollywood. It succeeds in portraying a middle class America that is so superficial and devoid of redeeming value that life itself is rendered meaningless. The protagonist is so riddled with angst that he makes angst seem like fun.
The Cast of Characters:
Lester—suicidal middle aged failure in a corrupt corporate world; fantasizes about pedophilia
Carolyn—his cold, distant wife who beds an associate to get ahead, becomes intrigued with pistols
Jane—their depressed, teen daughter who hates her parents and beds her teen neighbor
Ricky—the drug dealing, borderline-Columbine neighbor kid, who offers to kill Lester for Jane
Angela—Jane’s bff, pretty, shallow, promiscuous, airhead whose conceit betrays her self-doubt
Colonel Fitts—Ricky’s dad, brutal gun-loving Marine, latent homosexual
The plot is almost irrelevant and can easily be surmised from the cast of characters: Lester quits his meaningless job, gets another job slapping up burgers, discovers Carolyn’s affair, lusts after Angela, spares Angela from penetration when she says she’s a virgin, gets hit on by the colonel who initially suspected he was Ricky’s homosexual lover, has his brains blown out by said colonel, and dies with a contented smile on his face.
American Beauty manages to denigrate not only middle class America, but corporate life, America’s teens, and even the Marine Corps. The casting of Chris Moore—the FBI traitor in Breach—as Colonel Fitts was no coincidence either.
I can’t say American Beauty wasn’t a bad watch. Hey, even my wife called it “good” and it garnered a slew of Academy Awards and Oscars can’t be wrong, right? What always strikes me, though, is the Hollywood penchant for depicting others as dysfunctional when there are more dysfunctional people per square mile in Hollywood than anywhere else on the planet!
When can we expect to see Hollywood Beauty? Much of it could be shot in rehab facilities.
